		THE MAINE THING IS.... After the termination of my agreement with Bonsai West in Massachusetts I have relocated my personal nursery and studio to my property in southern Maine, which has opened up exciting new opportunities for me and for my students. Hard to believe, but in spring this snow-blanketed driveway leads to an oasis of bonsai where I develop plants of all ages from cuttings to ancient yamadori, and from virgin material to refined specimens in my small personal nursery. Although the growing season is two weeks shorter than in MA, the climate is less oppressive and doesn't enforce that stress-induced shut down in high summer - all my trees grow happily straight through until fall. I'm situated six miles north of Kennebunkport (the Bush family's summer retreat) and half an hour south of Portland where art and culture are endemic. The house stands in two idyllic wooded acres with massive ancient rocks covered in mosses and lichens and a vernal pool which provides me with a never-ending supply of fresh sphagnum moss. A peaceful, uncrowded sandy beach is little more than half a mile away and if you like lobster, there's no better place to be! . A heated barn converted into a large double garage currently serves both as my studio and my temporary workshop for house renovations. Next winter it will be fully customized as a studio. In the meantime, it does the job well enough. NEW! RESIDENTIAL BONSAI RETREATS Available from April to November Join me for a period of total immersion in bonsai, from four days to two weeks, with the focus on quality of both workmanship and results. Bring trees of your own if you wish - if that's not practical there are more than enough plants to work with in stock. During your stay you will benefit from my undivided attention as we work together on seasonal tasks, design analysis, horticulture and techniques. I like to teach, so nothing will be done without comprehensive explanations of what, how and why. All your questions will be answered fully, whenever possible with practical examples, and you will receive close instruction on improving all your techniques as well as learning new ones. You will stay in a comfortable self-contained apartment above the studio, with a full-size bed (additional sleeping accommodation is available) cooking facilities and a well-stocked library of bonsai books and magazines. Wireless internet access is also available. An intensive bonsai retreat or a bonsai-focused vacation, the choice is yours.
